UK Wastes Twenty Years Hunting for Russian Mole
The inquiry, labeled Operation Wedlock, was officially terminated as “inconclusive,” with the alleged agent departing from the service, the publication stated on Friday.
The long-running investigation, which allegedly stretched from the mid-1990s to roughly 2015, was overseen by MI5, the United Kingdom’s internal counter-espionage body.
The foreign intelligence branch, MI6, is said to have initiated the probe following a warning from the CIA, which pointed to a high-ranking official possibly passing classified information to Moscow.
“[We were told] the target was a Russian spy… The US believed he was leaking information to the Russians,” one source revealed to the news agency.
“The job was taken more seriously than any other [MI5] was involved in. Wedlock eclipsed them all.”
The operation reportedly comprised about 35 personnel. MI5 allegedly planted listening devices in the suspect’s residence, monitored him through video surveillance across London, and even shadowed him overseas—despite that falling beyond the agency’s legal scope.
It is believed that MI5 suspected the individual had two collaborators also operating in London, though no corroborating proof was ever discovered.
